Most people are scared to stand in front of a microwave because of the radiation it emits, but they won’t think twice about resting a laptop on their lap for hours on end. It’s scary, but most of us have turned our homes into something more harmful than a microwave.
What are EMFs?
Unfortunately, many people today are unfamiliar with what they are and how they might possibly be affecting their health; especially, people like me, who use their laptop or other electronic devices all day long. EMFs, also known as Electromagnetic fields, are invisible electrical and magnetic forces. Similar to the different type of fats we ingest, there are good and bad forms of EMFs. The types we’re concerned about are the ones that are emitted from electronic devices.
Why should you be worried about them?
While the association is weak, some experts believe exposure to electromagnetic fields from electronic devices can increase the risk of leukemia in children, and multiple types of cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other diseases in adults. After an extensive review of 2,000+ such studies, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences concluded EMFs “should be regarded as possible carcinogens.” To me, the scariest part is that laptops and other devices, such as cell phones and tablets, can produce up to 100x more radiation than the amounts used in these studies.

How can we protect ourselves?
Nowadays, there are many products we can use to protect ourselves from such high levels of EMFs. Whether you spend a significant amount of time on your laptop or not, I definitely recommend using a laptop pad to block some of the radiation entering your body. Two pads that seem pretty promising are HARApad and DefenderPad. And these shouldn’t just be used on your lap; as you will see in this video, your body can still absorb high levels of radiation even when your laptop is on a desk or stand. Aside from laptops, majority of the devices you use on a daily basis deliver high amounts of radiation. The best way to protect yourself is to keep them as far away from your body as possible. So, stop texting all day and start talking with your phone on speaker mode. And definitely don’t leave them on your nightstand while you sleep! As with anything, use your noggin.

Just as with GMOs and pesticides in the food we eat, EMF health risks are still unknown. But that doesn’t mean you should look the other way! I’m a firm believer that these forms of radiation affect us in harmful ways, so I’m always looking for better ways to limit my exposure to them. And remember, EMFs are also generated from other electronics, including cell phones, tablets, desktops, and wif-fi devices. So, keep them as far away from your body as possible.
